- In result of the 1800 Presidential Election the U.S government became more Democratic-Republican friendly. Because of the newly elected president [Thomas Jefferson] the amount of Democratic-Republicans in congress increased because of critical views made by the Federalists, which only fueled theDemocratic-Republicans support. During the election it just so happnds that the two Democratic-Republican nominees for president[Thomas Jefferson, and Aaron Burr] had the same number of votes in both houses of congress leaving the decision up to Alexander Hamilton to pick the next president. Hamilton described the decision as" choosing the lesser of two evils." After losing the election Aaron Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel in which Hamilton would die.Therefor after this entire election there showed a serious flaw in the constitution changing the way that the president and vice-president are elected in congress to this [the current 12th amendment]:
- The person having the greatest Number of votes for President, shall be the President, if such number be a majority of the whole number of Electors appointed; and if no person have such majority, then from the persons having the highest numbers not exceeding three on the list of those voted for as President, the House of Representatives shall choose immediately, by ballot, the President. But in choosing the President, the votes shall be taken by states, the representation from each state having one vote.[-this is only one part of the 12th amendment]
